Eskmo featured in Retronyms Release EP iPhone App: Outer Spaces
Retronyms have teamed up with musicians Eskmo, Exillon, Jneiro Jarel, and Starkey to release Outer Spaces, an EP in which all the tracks used Retronyms' iPhone app DopplerPadin their production.
DopplerPadis a synthesizer-based instrument inspired by tools such as the Korg Kaossilator and the Yamaha Tenori-On. It mimics the standard DJ setup of a mixer with turntables on either side, and is complete with over 40 instruments, a gate arpeggiator, loop export via wifi, instrument and effects editors, and Audio Copy and Audio Paste with compatible apps.
"Because we designed DopplerPadto be a tool professional musicians can use, we thought it'd be great to put together a compilation that showcases just what musicians are doing with it," says Retronyms co-founder Zach Saul.
So Retronyms contacted the artists involved, and they agreed to contribute tracks to the project. Some artists chose to use DopplerPad for the majority of the track production, while others used DopplerPad for sketching out ideas and then imported loops to a DAW for further manipulation.
For example, Eskmo relied heavily on the sampler while using DopplerPad, and Exillon and Starkey used Logic and other DAWs in addition to DopplerPad to create theirOuter Spacestracks.
Starkey (P.J. Geissinger) says about the experience, "Of the iPhone apps I've had the pleasure of messing around with, DopplerPadis by far one of the most fun and engaging. It took me a few train trips to really wrap my head around it, I must admit. But after I realized that the app was built more around spontaneity and less about midi sequencing, I was creating interesting loops at a feverish pace."
Outer Spaces is the first EP to use an iPhone app as an instrument in every track, and it can now be downloaded free of charge from http://www.dopplerpad.com/outerspaces. Retronyms are also celebrating the Outer Spaces launch with a DopplerPad sale, taking 20% off its original price for a limited time.
"In a world of mundane indie electronic acts, live performer Brendan Angelides stands out, and overseas musical heavyweights have taken notice. Respected U.K. labels Warp Records and Planet Mu have both released material by Angelides, who goes by the production and stage tag Eskmo. Local imprints like Surefire Sound and Full Melt have also embraced his innovative music, which pairs unusual percussive elements and colorful synths. "Lazer bass" would be a lazy description, since his music zigzags among multiple genres with rainbow sounds bouncing in unison.
His live set at SXSW wowed rock crowds. Angelides has also collaborated on a new single with Ninja Tune's Amon Tobin, and had a track featured on CSI Miami. Throw on his polyrhythmic Hypercolor EP (Ancestor Media) and you'll know why wide swaths of S.F. dance-music enthusiasts gravitate to his fluid music."
The idea of the Big Bounce @ Beldenwas essentially born as a glorified birthday party and was inspired by the dream of gathering friends to unite together in a beautiful place surrounded by nature, art and…BASS!
"It never ceases to amaze us that if you create the landscape for people to express themselves in a free, true and artistic way, the results exceed all expectations. We strive to bring that vibe continually, and hope that you will join us at the Bounce for our second year to be a part of the passion and love that went into creating this event," says the Big Bounce organizers.
